Sold Out

A short film inspired by true events that shaped urban theater.

About the Show

SOLD OUT is a short-form film inspired by true events surrounding the rise of urban theater and the individuals who laid the foundation for a cultural movement before it reached the mainstream.
Set during a pivotal moment in theater history, the project draws from the experiences of the first Black playwright to achieve national success on the stage — a path forged before the era of Tyler Perry and others, and led by Shelly Garrett, widely recognized as the Godfather of Urban Theater with his hit Stage Plays “Beauty Shop.”
The film explores ambition, pressure, sacrifice, and the unseen costs of breaking barriers — telling a story rooted in real struggle, real vision, and real impact.

Before urban theater became a household force, pioneers like Shelly Garrett carried the weight of building an industry from the ground up. Their work created opportunities, platforms, and visibility for generations of artists that followed. SOLD OUT reflects this era, not as a documentary, but as a narrative inspired by the realities of trailblazing success and the price that often comes with it.
